Yesterday was a whirlwind. We flew in to Hohhot (Inner Mongolia) just before noon. Before we left Beijing I had told everyone that my secret wish was to get the babies when we flew in on Sunday. I didn't think I would really get my wish. While the others were using the restroom, I asked Sandra (our local guide) what time on Monday we would be getting the babies. She smiled and said "the babies are here". The babies had been at a hotel close to the one we are staying at since Saturday. She asked if we wanted to each lunch first and the answer was a resounding "NO!" from Susan and I! We came to the hotel and within about 1/2 hour they brought the babies into my hotel room. Eliza was fine at first, but I think she quickly realized I was taking more interest in her than just a passerby! She started howling. Her Nanny quickly took her and held her until the orphanage staff left. There were many tears by everyone. Her nanny loved her and cried as she walked away. Eliza wanted to look at me, but I was not allowed to look at her for a few hours. The minute I would look at her or move her in a different position she would cry the saddest cry I have ever heard. I was ready for a long night. Much to my surprise by the time we went to bed she was warming up. She slept through the night, but I did not. I think I was running on adrenaline and I couldn't relax. At 5 am I heard Eliza start to stir so I hopped up and gave her a bottle. She is the tiniest little baby. She really can't weigh more than 14 lbs.
We went and did some paperwork today. The orphanage director was there. She held Eliza and played with her. She had Eliza laughing out loud. It was so cute. I got it on video. I think Eliza was loved. She does display some typical orphanage behaviors. She does some self stimulation behaviors such as bopping herself on the head repeatedly and is fascinated with her hands, but I'm sure with plenty of mommy time these behaviors will fade. She has a bit of a stuffy nose, but besides that she is eating and doing all the normal, healthy things a baby should do. Enough of the chatter. I know everyone is here for one reason...pictures!!! Here she is....the most beautiful baby in the world.

Tiffany,
Ellie, my first, was waiting in the hotel when we arrived in Changsha after nearly two days of travel (the bad old days, 1998). I just wanted to share the at I know EXACTLY how it feels to hear those words: the babies are here. What a sonic boom of emotion, nothing can describe those feelings. So you were having a little adrenaline rush, yah, I think so. Congratulations, can't wait to meet this sweetheart in person. So glad she's coming home to our fair city.

Hi So glad you have your baby. How great she was right htere on Sunday, and you didn't have to wait til Monday. No food first either Sounds motherly to me...and then no sleep that night for you anyway. Good practice for those times ahead when she doesn't sleep well for whatever reason. I will continue to read your journey and wish you well each step of the way with your sweet Baby Girl. Congratulations
